Amnesty Worldwide has urged Ghana’s Parliament and authorities to withdraw from consideration the proposed Promotion of Correct Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Household Values Invoice 2021.
In a public assertion issued on Monday, the human rights group acknowledged that the Invoice violates the ideas of equality and non-discrimination, the rights to freedom of expression, affiliation, and privateness, and the prohibition of torture enshrined in Ghana’s 1992 Structure and worldwide human rights treaties ratified by the nation.
Amnesty Worldwide particularly acknowledged that the invoice denies LGBTI individuals the human dignity assured to all individuals beneath Part 15 of the nation’s Structure.
“At a time when different nations around the globe, together with Angola and Gabon, are lifting discriminatory legal guidelines focusing on individuals for his or her actual or perceived sexual orientation, Ghana should not go in the other way,” the assertion stated.
“The Ghanaian authorities are inspired to guard equality and non-discrimination and different elementary human rights of all individuals in Ghana”.
Amnesty Worldwide’s condemnation of the invoice comes on the heels of an identical assertion by United Nations consultants urging the federal government to reject a proposed ‘household values’ invoice, claiming it seeks to determine a system of state-sponsored discrimination and violence towards the LGBTI neighborhood within the nation.
