Shatta Wale to face charges under Section 208 of Criminal & Offense Act with possible jail Term

Self-style Dancehall King Charles Nii Armah Mensah popularly known as Shatta Wale has put himself into trouble with the law after his latest publicity stunt to promote his GOG Album backfired, he is set to be arrested and charged as police hunt for him.

The Ghana Police Service is currently searching for the popular dancehall musician, Shatta Wale, who claimed to have been shot by some unknown gunmen yesterday.

According to several posts which have surfaced online, the reggae singer was shot at East Legon. Moreso, the singer’s representative, Nana Dope, revealed that the singer is alive and has been taken to the emergency ward of a hospital.

Later reports emerged that thr whole episode was a publicity stunt in anticipation of his GOG Album launch.

Criminal charges

Shatta Wale could face charges including but not limited to knowingly spreading false information, a statement or rumour which caused fear and panic and knowing same to be false. Upon conviction, he faces imprisonment of not more than 3 years.

This according to The Law Platform, an education platform for members of the public on social media.

Section 208 of the CRIMINAL AND OFFENCES ACT 1960, ACT 29 Reads:

PUBLICATION OF FALSE NEWS
(1) A person who publishes or reproduces a statement, rumour or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb the public peace knowing or having reason to believe that the statement, rumour or report is false commits a misdemeanour.

(2) It is not a defense to a charge under subsection (1) that the person charged did not know or did not have reason to believe that the statement, rumour or report was false, unless it is proved that, prior to the publication, that person took reasonable measures to verify the accuracy of the statement, rumour or report.

**A misdemeanour is an offence the punishment for which is imprisonment of not more than 3years **
